Crystal Lagoons: Beach Life Brought to Pretoria with First Lagoon in South Africa

The coast may be 600 kilometers away, but Pretoria has now got its own beach, thanks to the first Crystal Lagoons® amenity in sub-Saharan Africa.

September 8 marked the official grand opening of The Blyde in Pretoria and presented an upmarket lifestyle development in Riverwalk in the east of the capital, featuring a man-made crystalline lagoon, a first for sub-Saharan Africa. The event made front page news in the local newspaper, Pretoria News, on September 8.

Crystal Lagoons, the multinational waterinnovation company, has partnered with property giants Balwin Properties to bring the environmentally friendly beach to Pretoria, affording residents the chance to spend their recreation time on white sand and enjoying clear, turquoise waters.

The Blyde gives its residents the opportunity to live near an idyllic and clear water lagoon with two swimming pools. There also is a state-of-the-art lifestyle center which includes a restaurant, gym, multi-purpose sports fields and spa.

Crystal Lagoons had created revolutionary technology that keeps water consumption low, maintains the water’s color and creates a tropical paradise that can be enjoyed all year round.

This crystalline lagoon is the first of its kind to be built in sub-Saharan Africa, and is expected to raise the bar on new residential developments which have in the past included golf courses, recreational facilities and even wildlife areas.

Balwin Properties chief executive Steve Brookes, said having The Blyde developed around a lagoon has massive appeal to a wide range of people, “because nowhere else in Pretoria is that close to a large body of water which they can enjoy”.

The lagoon uses up to 30 times less water than a golf course and 50% less water than is required by a park of the same size.

“At 1.5 hectares (which is equivalent to just over 2 rugby fields), the lagoon will be a key selling-point to the development, and be the first lagoon to feature our game-changing technology and unique concept in sub-Saharan Africa,” said Alastair Sinclair, regional director for Africa at Crystal Lagoons.

Crystal Lagoons was founded by Fernando Fischmann and has developed innovative technology that allows the construction and maintenance of large crystal clear lagoons.

The company has built lagoons in Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the US, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Indonesia and Thailand, and has 600 projects in different stages of planning, design, construction or operation in 60 countries.

Crystal Lagoons is an international innovation company, founded by scientist Fernando Fischmann, which has developed a patent-protected technology that allows the construction and maintenance of unlimited-size crystalline lagoons at very low costs.
