Dallas Company has Fast-Growing Portfolio of Lagoon Projects Worldwide

Man-made lagoons are being built as amenities at residential and other projects across the nation and world, and a Dallas-based company with a patented process is leading the charge.

Last month, Crystal Lagoons opened its first lagoon in Texas near Humble and expects the Lone Star State to be its No. 1 market soon, said Kevin Morgan, executive vice president of Crystal Lagoons U.S. Corp. The company has big long-term plans for the state and North Texas in particular.

The 2-acre lagoon near the Harris County town of Humble, northeast of Houston, is in the Balmoral master-planned community.

The second lagoon to open in the state will be in Windsong Ranch in Prosper, and a third is scheduled to be in the $1 billion Bayside project in Rowlett, although the status of that project is uncertain.

“Within the next few years, Texas will be our leading U.S. market,” Morgan said in an interview with the Dallas Business Journal. “Our projects represent the future of outdoor lifestyle amenities, while also bringing enormous value to real estate projects.”

Crystal Lagoons already has more than 20 deals across the nation, including five in Texas, plus over 60 more that are currently in active negotiations. To date, worldwide, 600 man-made lagoons have been completed, started or planned by Crystal Lagoons.

The lagoons use a patented, high-tech process allowing for 100 times fewer chemicals and 50 times less energy than a traditional pool, Morgan said.

The 2-acre Balmoral lagoon is up to eight feet deep and the size of almost two football fields. It has a children’s cove and two white sand beaches, including a family beach with cabanas and lounge chairs, and a serenity beach that offers beach volleyball.

Crystal Lagoons is seeing strong demand for its product in residential projects, but also in retail environments such as shopping centers and big box stores, as well as in municipal public parks and distressed golf courses, Morgan said.

Balmoral’s crystal turquoise lagoon is the centerpiece of the community’s $13 million, 8-acre amenity village. An infinity-edge pool overlooks the lagoon, while other amenities include a clubhouse, food truck courtyard, hammock park, sand volleyball court, playground and splash pad.

The second Texas lagoon from Crystal Lagoons is under construction at Windsong Ranch in Prosper, north of Dallas, with a spring 2019 opening anticipated.

“We think that the lagoon at Windsong Ranch will add both significant value and sales velocity to the project,” said Craig Martin from Terra Verde Group, developer of Windsong Ranch in Prosper.

“The first time I saw Crystal Lagoons’ website, I was blown away,” Martin added in an interview with the Dallas Business Journal. “It was so cool. I said, ‘Gosh, if we can afford to build it, we have to do it.’ Why wouldn’t you? It’s a no-brainer.”

A visit to a Crystal Lagoons project Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, confirmed his expectations, he said.

The decision to add the amenity to Windsong Ranch is already paying off in sales.

“We already have a lot of people buying houses in Windsong specifically, they’re saying, because they heard about Crystal Lagoons,” Martin said.

The first lagoon developed by Crystal Lagoons in the U.S. opened at the Epperson community outside of Tampa, Florida, earlier this year. It is a 7.5-acre tropical-style lagoon.

Another Florida Crystal Lagoons feature — this one 14 acres — is opening soon at Twin Creeks Development’s Beachwalk community south of Jacksonville. Yet another prominent U.S. project in the pipeline for the company is a massive, 25-acre lagoon for Wynn Resorts on the iconic Las Vegas Strip.

Crystal Lagoons is an international innovation company, founded by scientist Fernando Fischmann, which has developed a patent-protected technology that allows the construction and maintenance of unlimited-size crystalline lagoons at very low costs.
