Today, there are more than 50 million man-made water bodies around the world, such as golf course ponds, retention ponds, man-made lakes and lagoons, reservoirs, dams, and many others. None of them have the high transparency and crystal clear water of swimming pools or tropical seas, but instead have murky water with a dark greenish color, due to algae proliferation and the accumulation of sediments on the bottom. For many years, different water treatment technologies have been applied in large water bodies to try to achieve high quality, such as the use of ozone, aeration and water jets, enzymes, biological equilibrium, fishes, and others. However, none of these methods created crystal clear water bodies with high transparency and safe bacteriological conditions.

The construction costs of a lagoon using Crystal Lagoons technology are very low, even less than that of a park of the same size. Furthermore, maintenance costs are very low due to the efficient use of chemicals and energy. This revolutionary technology also stands out because of its low water consumption, because it operates on a closed circuit, and only needs to compensate for water loss caused by evaporation. In comparison, one hectare of a crystal clear lagoon consumes only 50% of the water needed by a park of the same size, and an average sized lagoon consumes around 30 times less water than a golf course.
Furthermore, Crystal Lagoons’ new evaporation control film technology can be used in the lagoons, providing even lower evaporation rates and water consumption. For example, when using the Crystal Lagoons evaporation control technology, water consumption of an average sized lagoon may be reduced by up to 40 times less than for a golf course.
As an additional advantage, our lagoons can capture direct rainwater, thereby reducing the need for make-up water to compensate for evaporation. In some locations with high rainfall, it has been estimated that the lagoons can be refilled with just rainwater, practically not needing water to compensate for evaporation.
Additionally, Crystal Lagoons technology can use seawater, freshwater or brackish water, depending on availability.

Crystal Lagoons technology applies a pulse-based disinfection system that allows up to 100 times less chemicals to be used than are applied in swimming pools.
Conventional swimming pool technology requires high and permanent levels of residual chlorine or other disinfectants to be maintained in the water to keep the pool permanently disinfected and avoid contamination of the water brought by external agents such as bathers. Maintaining such high and permanent levels of chemicals in large water bodies imposes very high costs, making it non-viable economically. Also, it generates a high amount of DBPs (Disinfection-By-Products), which can be harmful to the environment. Therefore, it is not feasible to apply this disinfection technology in large water bodies.
Crystal Lagoons’ patented solution is to apply controlled pulses of very small quantities of oxidants/micro-biocides to the water in the lagoon, according to the growth cycles of algae and bacteria, in very specific patterns based on algorithms. In so doing, it is not necessary to maintain a high and permanent level of disinfection. The results of this efficient system are that it enables up to 100 times less additives to be used than are used in swimming pool and drinking water treatment, all of which reduces excessive expense on chemicals and further environmental damage.
The application of additives is coordinated by strategically located injectors and sensors. This operation is managed by the Crystal Lagoons Control Center through the internet, so it is not necessary to have skilled people on site to apply additives and monitor the water quality of the lagoon.
Also, Crystal Lagoons has developed and patented a new technology that enables the creation of different zones within large water bodies, whereby these zones can meet different water quality standards in order to comply with specific regulatory requirements.
Crystal Lagoons technology applies an efficient filtration system that uses only 2% of the energy consumed by conventional swimming pool centralized filtration systems.
Conventional swimming pool technology requires a pool's entire volume of water to be filtered between 1 to 6 times per day (generally 4 times per day depending on local regulations). For this, a centralized filtration system is used, which constantly captures water from the pool and filters such flow to recirculate the entire volume of water between 1 to 6 times per day in order to remove particles that produce turbidity. If this technology were applied to large water bodies, the filtration systems would be extremely big due to the large water volumes that would have to be filtered daily, resulting in a high impact on costs and physical space needed for its installation, which would make it impossible to use. Furthermore, the consumption of energy for the operation of filters and pumps would be enormous and at great cost. Therefore, the use of swimming pool filtration systems in large lakes and lagoons is neither economically feasible nor technically viable, as it would cause problems that are difficult to solve, such as the homogenous filtration of the water.
Crystal Lagoons’ patented solution is to apply natural compounds and different ultrasonic waves to the water in the lagoon, which enable the contaminant particles to be agglomerated into larger particles that are later removed from the lagoon. This means that only a small portion of the total water volume needs to be filtered.
Therefore, Crystal Lagoons’ efficient filtration system consumes only 2% of the energy used by conventional swimming pool filtration systems. Also, as the filtered flow is up to 300 times lower than for conventional systems, the whole filtration system is smaller, decreasing installation requirements in terms of pumps and filter sizes.
Telemetric Monitoring And Operation
All of the lagoons using Crystal Lagoons technology around the world are monitored, controlled and operated remotely by the Crystal Lagoons Control Center (CLCC), via internet through the cloud, not requiring skilled people on-site.
Specially designed systems and sensors continually report specific physicochemical and other water quality parameters through a proprietary telemetry platform, managed and operated through the cloud by the CLCC. All the different mechanical and hydraulic systems operating in the lagoons around the world are also activated and controlled from the CLCC, allowing for a constant monitoring and operation of the lagoons, to ensure excellent water quality all year round.
