The new Eco-Heated Lagoons by Crystal Lagoons™ technology reduces energy consumption for data center cooling by up to 50%, offering a disruptive solution using crystalline lagoons.
A solution to one of the main challenges of the technology industry is what Crystal Lagoons offers with our new Eco-Heated Lagoons by Crystal Lagoons™ technology. This innovation provides a sustainable way to cool data centers through crystalline lagoons while simultaneously heating these monumental bodies of water, addressing one of the key barriers in the data center industry.
While data centers are the backbone of the digital economy, they are also among the industries with the highest energy and water consumption. In fact, server cooling accounts for up to 50% of total energy use in these facilities, making cooling the greatest operational and environmental challenge for the sector.
Why is Eco-Heated Lagoons by Crystal Lagoons™ Technology the Solution?
The innovation of Crystal Lagoons® delivers multiple benefits, including:
Energy Efficiency
- The patented systems use only 2% of the energy required by conventional filtration systems, reducing energy consumption in the cooling process by up to 50%.
- This allows data centers to lower operational costs while meeting strict sustainability regulations.
Water Use Optimization
- A lagoon with this innovation consumes 33 times less water than a golf course and 40% less than a park of the same size.
- It operates in a closed circuit, preventing water waste.
- It can function with fresh, brackish, or seawater, adapting to local conditions and reducing pressure on critical freshwater sources.
Sustainable and Scalable Model
- Crystal Lagoons® technology uses up to 100 times fewer chemicals than a traditional swimming pool.
- It can be applied at any scale, ensuring flexibility and adaptability.
Heated Lagoons
- The Eco-Heated Lagoons by Crystal Lagoons™ technology makes it possible to maintain year-round heated lagoons without additional energy consumption by harnessing the residual heat generated by data centers.
- The lagoons can reach tropical temperatures of up to 81°F and thermal areas of up to 98°F without extra energy.
Strategic Impact on the IT Industry
Integrating crystalline cooling lagoons into data centers is not only a technological innovation, but it also:
- Reduces the carbon footprint, aligning projects with global sustainability commitments.
- Enhances operational resilience by ensuring a constant cooling even under extreme conditions.
- Improves competitiveness by offering operators and corporate clients a highly efficient solution with tangible benefits in cost reduction and green positioning.
Angel Lagoon Project
Located in Texas, United States, the Public Access Lagoons® project, Angel Lagoon, is the first development to implement the Eco-Heated Lagoons by Crystal Lagoons™. The complex will feature a 6 MW data center cooled by a 1.7-hectare crystalline lagoon.
Angel Lagoon is being developed by Crystal Lagoons in partnership with Land Tejas. At the same time, the data center will be built and operated by Deep Green Energy, a subsidiary of the British company Octopus Energy, one of the world’s leading energy companies.
